Condition Clauses หรือ If Clauses

Structure & Usage 4 Types of If Clauses (If Conditions)

Type 0/Zero Conditional If + Present Simple, Present Simple Structure If + S + V1, S + V1 Usage Used to talk about present, real/factual situations. Type 1/First Conditional If + Present Simple, Future Simple Structure If + S + V1, S + will +V1 Usage Used to talk about future real/factual situations. Type 2/Second Conditional If + Past Simple, Future in the past Structure If + S + V2, S + would +V1 Usage Used to talk about present or future unreal, imaginary situations. Type 3/Third Conditional If Past Perfect, Furture perfect in the past Structure If S + had + V3, S + would + have + V3 Usage Used to talk about past unreal, imaginary situations.

Type 0/Zero Conditional

Sentence Structure | โครงสร้าง

If + S + V1,

S + V1

Usage: Used to talk about present, real/factual situations.

Zero conditional ใช้เพื่อกล่าวถึงปัจจุบัน ซึ่งโดยกล่าวถึง ข้อเท็จจริงและเป็นไปได้ เป็นความจริงโดยทั่วไป หรือข้อเท็จจริงทางวิทยาศาสตร์ ในโครงสร้างนี้ สามารถใช้ when หรือ unless แทน if ได้โดยที่ความหมายไม่เปลี่ยนโครงสร้างทีใช้ก็คือ present simple

ตัวอย่าง
If it rains, the plants get wet. (when it rains, the plants get wet)
ถ้า/เมื่อฝนตก ต้นไม้ก็เปียก

If you heat the ice, it melts.
ถ้าเราทำให้ความร้อนกับน้ำแข็ง มันก็จะละลาย

If we boils water, it turns to stream.
ถ้าเราต้มน้ำมันจะกลายเป็นไอ

Unless you water the flowers, it wilts and dies finally.
ถ้าไม่รดน้ำต้นไม้ มันก็จะเหี่ยวเฉาและตายในที่สุด

If the weather is cold, the ice doesn't melt.
ถ้าอากาศหนาวน้ำแขงจะไม่ละลาย

Type 1/First Conditional

Sentence Structure | โครงสร้าง

If + S + V1,

S + will +V1

Usage: Used to talk about future real/factual situations.

ใช้กับเหตุการณ์ที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลซึ่งกันและกัน ถ้าสิ่งหนึ่งเกิดขึ้น อีกสิ่งหนึ่งจะเกิดขึ้นหรือมีขึ้น

ตัวอย่าง

If it rains, I will not take you out.
ถ้าฝนตก ผมจะไม่พาคุณไปข้างนอก

If you don't get up early, you may miss the train.
ถ้าคุณตื่นสายคุณอาจจะตกรถไป

You can take her out if you she is willing to go out with you.
คุณพาเธอออกไปข้างนอกได้ถ้าเธอยอมออกไปกับคุณ

If I meet her, I'll tell her to call you.
ถ้าผมพบเธอ ผมจะบอกให้เธอโทรหาคุณ

Note:
*  will อาจจะใช้ can, shall, may แทนได้

Type 2/Second Conditional 

Sentence Structure | โครงสร้าง

If + S + V2, S + would + V1

Usage: Used to talk about present or future unreal, imaginary situations.

ใช้บอกเล่าเกี่ยวกับ สิ่งที่ไม่เป็นจริง หรือตรงกันข้ามกับความจริง ในปัจจุบันหรืออนาคต

ตัวอย่าง

If I were you, I would take the dog to the vet.
ถ้าผมเป็นคุณ ผมจะพาหมาไปหาสัตวแพทย์

If it didn't rain, she would probably come to see you. ( the fact is it rains)
ถ้าฝนไม่ตกบางทีเธออาจจะมาพบแก  (ความจริงคือ ฝนตก)

Note:
*  would อาจจะใช้ could, should, might แทนได้
* ในกรณีที่เป็น verb to be ต้องใช้  were ทุกกรณี ไม่ว่าประธานจะเป็น เอกพจน์หรือพหูพจน์

Type 3/Third Conditional 

Sentence Structure | โครงสร้าง

If S + had + V3,

S + would + have + V3

Usage: Used to talk about past unreal, imaginary situations.

ใช้บอกเล่าเกี่ยวกับ สิ่งที่ไม่เป็นจริง หรือตรงกันข้ามกับความจริง ในอดีต

ตัวอย่าง

If John hadn't told her the true, I would have gone away without seeing her crying.
ถ้าคุณไม่บอกความจริงกับเธอ ผมก็คงจากไปโดยไม่ต้องพบเธอ (ความจริงคือ John บอกความจริงกับเธอไป ผมต้องเห็นเธอร้องให้)

If the server had not been down, we could have finished our last assignment. ( the fact is server had been down)
ถ้า  เซิร์ฟเวอร์ไม่ล่ม เราก็คงทำงานที่ได้รับมอบหมายชิ้นสุดท้ายเสร็จไปละ (ความจริงคือ เซิร์ฟเวอร์ล่ม)

Note:
*  would อาจจะใช้ could, should, might แทนได้
